Site Directory Site cannot be an arbitrary site

description

The installation manual says in chapter 3 that the site used for hosting the Site Listings list can be "any site or sub-site, anywhere on the farm". However, it looks like this isn't true. The "Configure the Site Directory Site" Central Admin page doesn't allow you to select an arbitrary site. Instead it only allows me to select a Site Collection using a Site Collection picker. The Site Listings list will then be created in the root site of the selected Site Collection. I've expected to be able to select a specific site, located anywhere in the farm.

Am I correct or am I missing something?

Hi, it sounds like you are confussing the out of the box site directory with the custom solution.

Please ensure you are using the pages that are labeled with '2010' under General Application Settings in Central Administration.

I am pretty sure I'm using the correct page. It's the page located at _admin/Microsoft.MCSUK.SPSiteDirectory2010/SiteDirectorySiteManager.aspx.

I've included a screenshot of my environment. I think it shows I'm on the correct page. You can also see there's a Site Collection picker. It also shows the popup that appears after clicking that Site Collection Picker and as you can see you can only select Site Collections root sites, not individual (sub)sites.

I'm running this on the latest Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Information Worker Demo VM.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me. Yes you are using the right page in central admin.

The site directory can be based on any site template but must be a site collection root, not a sub-site.

OK, so that means the installation manual is clearly wrong on two points. It says that you should base it on the "Blank Site" site definition and also that it can be any site or sub-site...
