Site directory on multiple Web Applications

Oct 7, 2010 at 4:53 PM

I have 2 web applications that I want to use the site directory with, is it possible to set up a site directory for each web application separately. I thought I had done that but it seems that all the sites for both Web Applications are all showing up in one Site Directory on one of the Web Applications.

I seem to have the same problem. I have two distinctive sets of sites I want to create a directory page from, both are in different site collections/web apps. One are team sites and the other is applications. So have http://intranet for team sites and http://apps for applications. No matter how hard I try to configure the Site Directory the contents of http://intranet seem to show up in http://apps list (and vice versa).

Is this a supported setup or can you only run one site directory per farm? If it's supported, can you provide documentation on how to configure it for multiple web apps. Following the current documentation doesn't seem to work in this setup.

It seems that the Status section in the Configure Site Directory Site option triggers the scan job for the last web application configured. Like I said, I have two web apps with the feature enabled on both of them. I cleared out the site directory list on each web app and configured the scan job to run every minute.

  1. Went into Configure Site Directory Site and enabled the first web app (http://web1)
  2. Went into Configure Site Directory Site end enabled the second web app (http://web2)
  3. Viewed the list on web1 and it was empty
  4. Viewed the list on web2 and it was full (with sites from both web1 and web2)
  5. Cleared out both lists
  6. Went into Configure Site Directory Site and enabled the first web app again (http://web1)
  7. Viewed the list on web1 it was full (with sites from both web1 and web2)
  8. Viewed the list on web2 and it was empty

So, you cannot have two site directory sites configured at the same time. I'm pretty sure you can have one site directory site setup and configure mutiple web apps to be scanned independently so if you want a central site directory for everything this works.

Hopefully this will be recognized as a bug or missing feature and be fixed at some point.

This is by design.

Each farm can have only a single site diretcory site. However this can contain listings from as many or as few of your web applications as you'd like.

If the ability to support multiple site diretcory sites on the same farm is importnat, please log it in the issue tracker as a feature.
